Restoring a 1867 Home for Modern Living
While the original home remained structurally sound, a later addition had deteriorated beyond repair. The unheated space was no longer suitable for year-round living and was literally separating from the original structure. The homeowners wanted to preserve the history and character of their home while creating a functional, energy-efficient space designed for modern family living.
Strongback Construction was proud to help make that vision a reality.
The Challenge
The existing addition had reached the end of its life and required complete removal. At the same time, the homeowners wanted to improve the home’s layout, increase living space, modernize every major system, and create a seamless transition between the historic home and a new addition.
Achieving this required careful structural planning to protect the original 1867 home while integrating an entirely new two-storey addition.
The Transformation
The project began with the complete demolition of the failing addition. A new foundation and insulated crawl space were constructed to support a beautiful two-storey addition that blends naturally with the original home.
The new addition now includes:
• A spacious primary bedroom retreat
• Walk-in closet
• Private ensuite featuring a custom tiled shower
• Main floor living room
• Main floor powder room
Inside the original home, nearly every space was reimagined.
The main floor was opened up by removing a structural partition wall, creating a bright, open-concept kitchen and dining area that better suits today’s lifestyle. A completely redesigned kitchen features new cabinetry, quartz countertops, and a layout designed for both everyday living and entertaining.
Upstairs, where no plumbing previously existed, the home now features a fully functional three- piece bathroom and convenient laundry area, dramatically improving the home’s functionality.
